Royan, the main character, has been beautifully portrayed through the author's generous use of detail and descriptions. The reader will be drawn into Royan's world as he reads about his daily life experiences. The depiction of a young boy whose life began as a cast-away infant adopted by a family, mingled with a somewhat normal childhood, and finally a downward spiral when he is forced to leave his home and take refuge in the city, is very poignant and real. The reader will feel as if he is right there with Royan.

Beyond a Span is a gutsy, vivid and all too true account of the tragic and triumphant life of a culture rich in age-old customs and tradition; yet plagued by famine, pestilence, greed and the constant day to day battle to survive.
